As a teenager, Wesley represented Holland at every age level, catching the eye in a number of official tournaments. He made his debut for the U21 side against the Czechs in March 2003, and then just one month later was promoted by Dick Advocaat to the senior squad for a friendly against Portugal, when he came on at half-time to replace Edgar Davids.

In his next appearance, a Euro 2004 qualifier against Moldova, he scored his first senior international goal to help Holland line up a play-off against Scotland.

Wesley watched the first leg in Scotland from the stands, as his teammates suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat. For the second leg, Advocaat rang the changes, and threw Wesley on from the start. By the end of the first half he had scored the opener, and set up goals two and three to set Holland on their way to a 6-0 win and a place in the Portugal.

Wesley only featured twice in the finals – in the 1-1 draw against the Germans and the 3-0 win versus Latvia during the group phase. Two years later, however, at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, he was an ever-present, though was deployed out of his regular position, as a defensive midfielder, limiting his natural attacking tendencies.

At the Euro 2008 Wesley Sneijder played a more attacking role and was one of the best for Holland. He was selected among the 23 players for the UEFA EURO 2008 Team of the Tournament. He played three matches scoring two goals. One against Italy (3-0) and one against France (4-1).
